2014 Odyssey Versa Jailbird Putter Series Review

2014 Odyssey Versa Jailbird Putter Series Review

Odyssey Versa Jailbird Putter Series: $169.99

Put yourself in this situation: no matter how difficult it may be for someone that plays this awesome/disturbing game of putter roulette… So, a gal or guy walks into a golf or pro shop and needs a little inspiration and tells the assistant to the assistant or checkout clerk that they hate golf and are going to quit.

Why?  They need a new putter, something, you know, that’s different to look at. Now turn to the “Bright Lights, Big City” of putters, the Odyssey Versa Jailbird Putter.

Let’s check the credentials:

  1. No. 1 putter insert on tour; check (I’m actually unsure, but I did use its website on the Internet… and that is always true.).
  2. Right-handed models, 31.
  3. Left-handed models, 13.

“I can’t figure out which hand to putt with?”  Don’t worry, if your head is like mine, it’s already spinning from all the 3-putts. What could go wrong with trying to figure out which of the 79 putters from the Odyssey family is right for you?

Just try another series of Odyssey putters.

I think next year they’ll make TaylorMade believe that its R1 driver was the only driver brought out in 2013.

There are no two ways about it; they look like Oreo cookies  (or old prison garb). Odyssey Versa jailbird Series Putter technology may have some effect on face angle as well as how we subconsciously manipulate the face angle of the putter to be the opposite of the last putt we missed to the left. However, I find all this gimmickry should stay with larger, more expensive clubs.

Someone at Odyssey’s R&D Department must have found a way to take the soft filling from an Oreo cookie and use it as the insert in its Versa Jailbird Series Putters, because it is ridiculously soft (I never knew marshmallows were used in Oreos.). Next year, I can only hope to receive the assignment of reviewing the Odyssey Metal X family, because that is a beautiful combination of feel/feedback; and my arthritis can rest assured it shall not hurt too bad.

Final Thoughts

Personally, I found it hard to get good feedback, which for me would be next to impossible to improve with my 30-plus footers (which is generally my average proximity to the hole).  Compared to the Odyssey Metal X Milled Series, which I found had a much softer feel than the name it possesses, the Odyssey Versa Jailbird Series is more appropriate for the player looking for that knife through butter feel.

They must be part owners in SuperStroke or just owe them money, because most can be purchased for $30 extra with the SuperStroke Grip installed. (We charge $24.99 at 2nd Swing Golf for the SuperStroke Grip. Do the math.)
